What do you get when you combine a creative kid, Disney’s Mandalorian characters, dyslexia, and a writing contest? You get a very happy contest winner from The Academy Virtual!

THE KARINA EIDE YOUNG WRITERS AWARDS
In February of 2021, Sam entered a nation-wide writing contest sponsored by Dyslexic Advantage. The Karina Eide Young Writers Awards were given to students with dyslexia. Works were judged on ideas, storytelling, humor, feeling, and writing strengths, and not on technical aspects such as spelling.

MANDO AND THE FORCE
We know writing can be a challenge when you have a language learning difference, but that didn’t stop Sam. His creative gift was in full force (Enter Star Wars reference. The force is strong in this one!) as he used popular Disney characters, The Mandalorian and Yoda, to script a unique acrostic poem.

DYSLEXIA IS A GIFT
In the poem, Mando struggles with spelling and becomes irritated with himself. Kids with learning differences know these types of struggles all too well.

By the end of the piece, with some help from his teacher Yoda, Mando gains confidence, realizes he has greatness, and learns his dyslexia is a gift!

“Far away, Mando learned that Dyslexia is not a problem, it is a gift.”
