The Academy Virtual is another valuable component of The Academy Way movement.
The Academy Virtual is a year-round global online school specializing in educating students with Dyslexia, ADHD and severe reading deficiencies. We utilize Structured Literacy and other interactive and multi-sensory teaching methods to help children become successful and confident readers in a motivating and supportive virtual environment.
Our Structured Literacy teachers are highly trained, experienced and licensed in various Structured Literacy programs and curriculum, such as OG, Wilson and Take Flight. We also offer Reading Comprehension with Phonemic Awareness, Writing, and Math instruction from equally qualified and passionate teachers to further enchance and support the literacy development of our students.
The Academy Virtual's mission is to provide our students with the skills, knowledge and confidence to become extraordinary readers, students and adults.
An Academy Virtual student is in 3rd - 8th grade, and has or possesses some or all of the following:
We believe Structured Literacy is the most effective way to help students who have dyslexia and others with severe reading challenges, language processing challenges, and/or poor writing and spelling skills. The Academy Virtual utilizes what we believe to be 3 of the most highly respected Structured Literacy "programs" as the core element of our entire school's approach -
As stated by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), "Successful literacy instruction and interventions provide a strong core of highly explicit, systematic teaching of foundation skills such as decoding and spelling skills, as well as explicit teaching of other important components of literacy such as vocabulary, comprehension, and writing and provides the primary effectiveness of our approach." A Structured Literacy program includes the following elements as defined by the IDA:
You can find more specifics about the above elements in the IDA Dyslexia Handbook: What Every Family Should Know
All of our Teachers have the related and necessary training, experience, and licenses/certifications from the specific structured literacy program(s)/methods above that they use with your child while attending The Academy Virtual. We encourage you to learn more about Structured Literacy practices by clicking this link containing additional information from the IDA.
The Academy Virtual is committed to the principle of equal opportunity in education and employment. The school does not discriminate against individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, generic information, veteran status, ancestry, or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, employment policies, and other school-administered programs and activities.
